Nine local promising medtech companies have been selected to join Brisbane Economic Development Agency’s (BEDA) fifth MedTech Initiative (MTI) Global Accelerator, fast-tracking their path to global investment, commercialisation and international growth.
From pioneering nerve repair technologies to a portable brain scanning platform for rapid stroke diagnosis, the cohort is developing transformative technologies with the potential to reshape healthcare worldwide.
Delivered by BEDA, in partnership with US investor platform Life Science Nation, the six-month program equips companies with the investor connections, commercial expertise, and global partnerships needed to accelerate market entry and scale internationally.
The program will culminate in January 2027, when the cohort pitches to global investors and partners at J.P. Morgan Healthcare Week in San Francisco – the world’s largest healthcare capital marketplace, and a premier opportunity to connect with leading healthcare investment community.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the MedTech Global Accelerator was helping local companies take Brisbane innovation to the world.
"Brisbane is home to some of Australia's leading medtech companies, developing new ways to diagnose illness, improve treatment and save lives," Cr Schrinner said.
"Health is one of Brisbane's fastest-growing industries, forecast to expand by 36 per cent by 2031.
"We are determined to turn that growth into global investment, high-value local jobs and new healthcare technologies reaching patients sooner.
"From faster stroke diagnosis and neonatal care to new treatments for neurological disease and advances in women's health, this cohort shows the strength of Brisbane's medtech sector.
"When these companies pitch in San Francisco, they will be flying the flag for Brisbane on the world's biggest healthcare stage."
Now entering its fifth year, the accelerator has helped more than 40 visionary companies secure $391 million in capital and create more than 315 jobs in Brisbane.
Brisbane Economic Development Agency CEO Anthony Ryan said BEDA would continue to champion Brisbane's world-class medtech sector.
"Through BEDA’s MedTech Initiative Global Accelerator, we're connecting ambitious companies with the international networks, investment and expertise they need to accelerate growth, unlock new markets and build globally competitive businesses, " Mr Ryan said.
“The success of our MedTech alumni demonstrates what's possible when local innovation is backed with the right support, and we're excited to see our Year Five cohort write the next chapter of that success."
Brisbane-based NuNerve, part of the new cohort, is developing a first-in-class biologic for motor neurone disease (MND) that targets a key driver of disease progression, with the potential to preserve motor neurons and restore neural connections.
Their lead candidate, NUN-004, is designed to slow or halt disease progression while promoting the repair of damaged neural pathways in people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a fatal neurodegenerative disease for which treatment options remain extremely limited.
Professor Perry Bartlett AO, Chairman of NuNerve, said the company was pleased to be joining the accelerator program.
"We're delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the accelerator and to connect with the broader innovation and investment community in Queensland and globally," Professor Bartlett explains.
"Programs such as this play an important role in supporting emerging companies as they navigate the path towards commercialisation.
“We look forward to working with the BEDA team and fellow cohort participants as NuNerve prepares to commence our phase 2 trial for the treatment of motor neurone disease."
