Record $2.3 billion boost delivers jobs and growth for Brisbane

17 AUGUST 2026

Initiatives to grow Brisbane's visitor economy, secure major events and attract new investment delivered a record $2.3 billion boost to Brisbane’s economy in 2025-26, supporting more than 18,000 local jobs and driving trade through the city's hotels, restaurants, tourism operators, innovators and small businesses.

The result was driven by Brisbane City Council’s Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), the city's agency for growing the visitor economy, securing major events and conventions, attracting global investment and helping local businesses expand.

The agency supported 18,245 jobs and created 744 new roles across the city, with the benefits reaching households and businesses right across Brisbane.

More than $1.5 billion was generated through investment attraction and business growth, including programs like the MedTech Global Accelerator and Future Food Initiative that help local businesses reach global capital and new markets to grow.

A blockbuster events calendar brought the world to Brisbane and filled the city's hotels, restaurants and stadiums.

Events including the British & Irish Lions Tour, Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, NRL Magic Round (secured until 2032) and Bluey's World (extended to 2028) contributed $411 million, while international conferences and incentive travel added a further $103 million by bringing global delegates into the city.

Destination marketing and travel trade activity contributed more than $304 million, drawing more domestic and international visitors and encouraging them to stay longer, which helped lift visitor spending to a record $17.1 billion across Brisbane.

Local businesses also gained new support through the launch of the Women in Business Champion Program and expanded programs at the Brisbane Business Hub.

It is the third year in a row that this work has added more than $1 billion to the Brisbane economy, and the strongest result on record.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the record boost for the city's economy meant more jobs and more to see and do for Brisbane residents.

"Behind these numbers are real jobs for Brisbane locals, more customers walking through the doors of our small businesses and more visitors filling our hotels, cafes and restaurants," Cr Schrinner said.

"When we bring major events and new investment to Brisbane, it is our residents who feel the benefit in the work it creates and the opportunities it opens up close to home.

"This is why we are Australia’s lifestyle capital and every result like this builds a stronger, more prosperous Brisbane as we look towards 2032 and beyond."

BEDA CEO Anthony Ryan said the agency's record $2.3 billion result reflected the scale of Brisbane's economic momentum.

"We’ve helped deliver one of the biggest major events calendars in the country, while supporting the growth of Brisbane's visitor economy to record levels and securing significant new investment for the city," Mr Ryan said.

"Brisbane's momentum is extraordinary, and our role is to keep bringing the right people together to turn that momentum into jobs, growth and lasting economic value.

"We're proud of what we've achieved this year, but our work doesn't stop here. We're focused on creating long-term value for Brisbane."

BEDA Chairman Paul Spiro said the agency's strength was its ability to get the right people around the table and turn shared ambition into results.

"Brisbane works best when business, government and industry pull in the same direction," Mr Spiro said.

"Supported by our Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, BEDA plays a unique role in making that happen, bringing together the expertise, relationships and leadership needed to unlock opportunities for the city.

"These record results show what Team Brisbane can achieve when we work as one, and the impact is far greater than any organisation could deliver alone."

Working alongside Brisbane City Council and key partners including Brisbane Airport, Tourism and Events Queensland, Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre and industry, BEDA continues to bring together Team Brisbane to attract investment, foster innovation, grow visitation, support local businesses and deliver lasting economic outcomes for the city.
